Tropical storm Nock-Ten causes havoc

The Star reported of storms killing over 50 in the Philippines and S. Korea, rain expected here. Nock-Ten named after a Laotian bird, is expected to cause more damage in the northern areas of Luzon island while bringing heavy rain to Manila. At least 25 people died and as many as 31 others went missing as a slow-moving tropical storm dumped enormous amounts of rain across the Philippines main island.

The image below shows cars stranded on a submerged street in Seoul as 400mm of rainfall pounded Seoul yesterday. At least 28 people were killed.

However in Malaysia, Nock-Ten is expected to bring rain and strong winds to northern Sabah, Pahang and Selangor over the next two days. The MET assured the public no need to panic over the tropical storm as Malaysia would only experience its indirect effects.

Malaysia 19th safest country in the world: Global Peace Index

Malaysia has been ranked the most peaceful country in South East Asia, the fourth safest in the Asia Pacific behind New Zealand, Japan and Australia, and the 19th safest and peaceful out of 153 countries in the world.

This ranking by the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2011 is the first time that Malaysia has been placed that high since 2007, being one of the six non-European nations making the top 20 list. The other five were Iceland, New Zealand, Japan, Qatar and Australia.

In 2007, Malaysia was ranked 37th and fell to 38th place in 2008 and improved for the next three years from 26 in 2009 to 22nd in 2010 and moving up to 19th in 2011.

The research said Malaysia supplanted Singapore as the highest ranked in 2010 for South-East Asian nation. Singapore ranked second in SEA and 24th overall, followed by Vietnam (30th overall), Laos (32nd overall), Indonesia (68th overall), Thailand (107th overall), Myanmar (133rd overall) and the Philippines (136th overall).

As for developed countries, United Kingdom was ranked at 26th, South Korea (50th), China (80th) and United States of America (82nd).

The top 10 placement were Iceland as the country most at peace, followed by New Zealand, Japan (third), Denmark (fourth), Czech Republic (fifth), Austria (sixth), Finland (seventh), Canada (eighth), Norway (ninth), Slovenia (tenth).

Malaysia fell second behind Qatar in terms of Islamic country where the latter was ranked 12th, and it was the best compared to other middle eastern countries. Second placed in middle east was Kuwait, ranked 29th in the world.

The last 10 countries in the rank was Libya (143rd), followed by Central African Republic, Israel, Pakistan, Russia, Democratic Republic of Congo, North Korea, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and Somalia.

The research said that war-torn Somalia dropped one place to replace Iraq as the country ranked least at peace.

The haze is back in Malaysia

The haze is back. Today, major parts of the country were shrouded in haze as a result of fires in Sumatra and Borneo.

According to The Star, satellite images showed 217 hotpots in Sumatra yesterday and over 300 in Borneo and 13 in the peninsula as of 6am this morning.

Petaling Jaya recorded a poor visibility level of 2.5km as of 4pm this afternoon while Sepang and Kuantan had a visibility of 1.5km and 4km respectively.

Normal visibility levels should be more than 10km.

Moderate air quality readings for 36 areas or 73% were recorded by the Department of Environment while the remaining areas were still within the healthy API reading of between 0 to 50 as of 11am this morning.

API at various parts of the country as reported by The Star:

As of 5pm yesterday, Bukit Rambai in Malacca recorded the worst air quality reading at 83, followed by Nilai in Negri Sembilan at 80. Nine areas recorded readings of above 70 including Shah Alam (79) and Port Klang (77) while Petaling Jaya had an API of 67.

The API for Sabah and Sarawak varied between 24 and 68.

Visibility levels dropped for several hours to 2km in some areas, including Petaling Jaya however levels improved in most areas by 8pm including Sepang (KLIA) which went from 1.5km at 4pm to 9km by 8pm.

However, levels still remained poor for Petaling Jaya (6km), Sitiawan (3km), Kuantan (6km) and Kuala Terengganu (6km) as of 8pm.

Dry conditions are expected to persist until September due to the southwest monsoon although showers have been forecasted in the west coast and isolated thunderstorms in the east coast later in the week. In East Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak are expected to be fair today with showers in Limbang, Miri, Sandakan and the interiors of Sabah and Tawau. Though it could be a health hazard, the haze is a normal occurrence at this time of the year due to the dry weather conditions.

Patients with diseases associated with breathing problems are advised to take extra precautions during the haze period, doctors advised to Shield yourself against the haze..

This has been stipulated under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed by both Malaysia and Indonesia on May 30. The signing of the MoU ends the maid-freeze to Malaysia in 2009 imposed by Indonesia.

For instance, "if an employer has a maid who wants to return home after her contract ends, and if she has a family member who wants to replace her as a maid, the employer can hire her directly without going through an agency.”

However, employers will have to adhere to set procedures of which they are in the process of finalising by both governments. A work permit will only be issued after a contract of agreement between the employer and the maid has been signed and approval granted by the relevant agencies concerned in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The MoU also stipulates that "the employer would have to give a day off to the maid once a week or one and a half day's pay if the maid opts to give up the rest day and work instead.

Last train out of Tanjung Pagar, Singapore

SINGAPORE: Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's (KTMB) historic train service which has been operating from the Tanjung Pagar station here for the last 79 years has ended with a royal send-off.

The train was driven for the last time out of the station by Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar at 11pm last night, carrying more than 500 passengers on its coaches.

The handing over of the Tanjong Pagar station, built in 1932, follows an agreement made between Singapore and Malaysia last year which includes Singapore taking possession of KTM land here.

In return, Malaysia was offered 60% control of projects developed at prime land parcels around Marina Bay and Ophir Rochor.
